Bulbs
Bulbs generally fall into two main categories, spring flowering bulbs which need planting in the autumn, and summer / autumn flowering bulbs which need planting in the spring.
Spring flowering bulbs are the most popular with species like Daffodils, Narcissi, Tulips, Alliums, Crocus and Snowdrops proving to be perennial favourites. By planting diferent varieties that flower at different times you can get colour in your garden from January to may. Most bulbs are equally happy planted into patio tubs and plant pots, this has become very popular in recent years as it means you can still plant bedding plants, vegetables or other plants in the garden and borders.
Summer flowering bulbs are easy to grow and are probably under used by many gardeners, as in recent years bedding plants have taken over at that time of year. Gladioli, Begonias, Crocosmia and Freesias all provide abundant colour in the summer and many can be used to cut flowers from to bring in the house.
